Welcome

Thank you for taking the time to look at this site. We hope that it will encourage you to think about whether you might want to apply to be our next Chair of Trustees.

This is the most important appointment we as a Trust will have made for many years. Our present Chair, Laura Marks CBE, will have held the role for nine years when she steps down in the summer of 2025. Under her leadership the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust has advanced greatly and is now widely recognised and acknowledged for its work in leading not only the national commemoration of the Holocaust each January but also for its work in commemorating more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur and in spreading the messages to be learned from all of these tragic events throughout the year to schools, local authorities, community groups and many other organisations throughout the UK.

We are privileged to receive grant funding for our work from both the UK government and from the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. We are also grateful for the donations we receive to support our work from many individuals and organisations. We are extremely fortunate to have a committed and highly effective staff team led by our Chief Executive, Olivia Marks-Woldman OBE.

But despite these major contributors to our success we inevitably face challenges in the future. We have rarely lived through a time when prejudice and division have been as acute in our society as they are currently, and in which both antisemitism (anti-Jewish hatred) and anti-Muslim hatred have risen to unprecedented levels. Leading and navigating the Trust through the years to come, and helping ensure we have the necessary resources to undertake our work, is going to require someone with exceptional experience, commitment and inter-personal skills.

Could that person be you? If you think it could be we would be delighted to receive an application from you for the role. We welcome all such applications irrespective of gender, ethnicity, faith or any other characteristic. For our part we assure you of an open and transparent recruitment process. I greatly look forward to hearing from you.

Sir Leigh Lewis KCB
Vice Chair of Trustees and Chair of the Board Recruitment Sub-Committee
